Peromaa-Haavisto and colleagues present a prospective, multicenter single-arm study testing bariatric surgery's effectiveness in treating sleep apnea in those with severe obesity. Using standard objective pre-and one-year post-operative measures of apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), they observe significant improvement of sleep apnea with weight loss. Other measures, such as heart rate, waist/neck circumference, and Epworth sleepiness scale(1) score also significantly improve. Notably, not all patients experience remission or improvement in sleep apnea.
