Asthma exacerbations are caused frequently by infection of the airways with viruses, including rhinovirus, and result in neutrophil recruitment to the airways. Activated neutrophils can undergo NETosis, the extracellular release of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA)–containing complexes called neutrophil extracellular traps. Toussaint et al (Nat Med 2017;23:681-91; http://ift.tt/2u43WUc) identified an important role for NETosis in virus-induced asthma exacerbations. After nasal infection of human subjects with rhinovirus, host-derived dsDNA was detected in nasal lavage fluids.
