According to a 2014 CADTH rapid response report, the evidence suggested that N95 respirators were more effective in preventing viral and bacterial infections in HCWs compared with surgical masks. Moreover, several clinical guidelines recommended the use of N95 respirators for managing patients with tuberculosis or highly contagious diseases, such as SARS and high-risk pandemic influenza. The results, however, must be interpreted with caution due to several limitations described in the report.
