Oral immunotherapy (OIT) has emerged as an exciting treatment with the potential to help food-allergic children tolerate a food they have previously been told to avoid, sometimes for years, and often with substantial emotional and financial costs. However, there is an abundance of controversy surrounding OIT. This article will review safety and efficacy, explore arguments in favour of and against use of OIT outside of research, and address the role of licensed products for OIT.
