Astroglial Connexin 43 Hemichannels Modulate Olfactory Bulb Slow Oscillations

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 13 δευτερόλεπτα
Astroglial Connexin 43 Hemichannels Modulate Olfactory Bulb Slow Oscillations: An emergent concept in neurosciences consists in considering brain functions as the product of dynamic interactions between neurons and glial cells, particularly astrocytes. Although the role played by astrocytes in synaptic transmission and plasticity is now largely documented, their contribution to neuronal network activity is only beginning to be appreciated. In mouse olfactory bulb slices, we observed that the membrane potential of mitral cells oscillates between UP and DOWN states at a low frequenc... περισσότερα »

Interneuron Transcriptional Dysregulation Causes Frequency-Dependent Alterations in the Balance of Inhibition and Excitation in Hippocampus

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 14 δευτερόλεπτα
Interneuron Transcriptional Dysregulation Causes Frequency-Dependent Alterations in the Balance of Inhibition and Excitation in Hippocampus: Circuit dysfunction in complex brain disorders such as schizophrenia and autism is caused by imbalances between inhibitory and excitatory synaptic transmission (I/E). Short-term plasticity differentially alters responses from excitatory and inhibitory synapses, causing the I/E ratio to change as a function of frequency. However, little is known about I/E ratio dynamics in complex brain disorders. Transcriptional dysregulation in interneurons, ... περισσότερα »

Qualities of Single Electrode Stimulation as a Function of Rate and Place of Stimulation with a Cochlear Implant.: Objectives: Although it has been shown previously that changes in temporal coding produce changes in pitch in all cochlear regions, research has suggested that temporal coding might be best encoded in relatively apical locations. The authors hypothesized that although temporal coding may provide useable information at any cochlear location, low rates of stimulation might provide better sound quality in apical regions that are more likely to encode temporal information i...περισσότερα »

Keratin 5 (K5) is a cytoskeletal protein in the epithelial cells of skin and esophagus, and is a predominant keratin of the basal and suprabasal cell layers of the epidermis by forming heterodimers with keratin 14. Although K5 is a good marker of epithelial cells, such as keratinocytes, it disappears during differentiation, indicating that K5 expression is transient during the lifespan of epithelial cells [1]. An aberrant carotid artery in the temporal bone with fatal complication: We report the case of an 84-year-old female presenting with an aberrant ICA with cerebral air embolization caused by Eustachian tube air inflation (ETAI). High pressure of air inflation developed because of an aberrant ICA blocking the tympanic orifice of the Eustachian tube, with release of the high-pressure air into the aberrant ICA. It must be kept in mind that complications may occur not only during transtympanic treatment, but also in any treatment, such as ETAI, in aberrant ICA cases.
