Correlations of SOX9 expression with serum IGF1 and inflammatory cytokines IL-1α and IL-6 in skin lesions of patients with acne

OBJECTIVE: To study the correlations of sex determining region Y-box 9 (SOX9) expression with serum type-1 insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), interleukin-1α (IL-1α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in skin lesion tissues of patients with acne.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six patients with acne who were treated for the first time in our outpatient clinic from June 2017 to July 2017 were selected as observation group, and 6 normal subjects were selected as control group. The expression of SOX9 was detected by immunohistochemistry. The protein expressions of IGF-1, IL-1α, and IL-6 were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). SOX9 was detected by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR).

RESULTS: Compared with that in control group, the expression of SOX9 in observation group was significantly increased (p < 0.05). Compared with those in control group, the expressions of IGF-1, IL-1α and IL-6 in observation group were significantly increased (p < 0.05). Compared with that in control group, the mRNA expression of SOX9 in observation group was significantly increased (p < 0.05). SOX9 was positively correlated with IGF-1, IL-1α and IL-6.

CONCLUSIONS: The expressions of SOX9, IGF-1, IL-1α, and IL-6 in skin lesion tissues of patients with acne are increased, and SOX9 is positively correlated with IGF-1, IL-1α, and IL-6 and can be used as a target for the treatment of acne inflammation.

Efficient management of frequently occurring destructive dust storms requires an in-depth understanding of the extent of impacts of such events. Due to limited availability of observational data, it is difficult to understand/estimate the impact of dust aerosols on the Earth's radiation budget in detail. This study, applies a regional model, Weather Research and Forecasting model with chemistry (WRF-Chem), to investigate the impact of an intense dust storm that originated over the Arabian peninsula during 01–02 April 2015 and transported towards the Indian subcontinent by the westerly winds. Two identical numerical experiments are designed, each for 15 days, one with and another without dust aerosols, to estimate the impact of the dust storm over the Indian subcontinent and adjoining regions. WRF-Chem model reproduced the spatial, temporal as well as the vertical distribution of dust plume reasonably well.Model results show significant changes in aerosol optical, physical and radiative properties due to the dominance of coarse mode aerosols in the atmosphere during the dust storm. Analysis of vertical profiles of particulate matter (PM10) concentration reveals the presence of dust aerosols extending from the surface to altitudes as high as 3–4 km during the dust storm period. The dust storm induced a cooling effect at the surface via reduction in shortwave (SW) radiative flux. A substantial decrease in temperature is also seen at 850 hPa due to dust, indicating a significant impact of dust layer on the atmospheric temperature profile. Atmospheric heating due to dust aerosols in the SW region is found to be compensated up to a large extent by longwave (LW) cooling effect of dust. The net dust induced radiative perturbation at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) over different regions is negative and varied from −2.49 to −0.34 Wm-2, while it is in the range of −0.62 to + 0.32 Wm-2 at the surface.

Reducing aviation emissions will be a major concern in the coming years, as the relative contribution of aviation to overall emissions is projected to increase in the future. The South Coast Air Basin of California (SoCAB) is an extreme nonattainment area with many airports located upwind of the most polluted regions in the basin. Techniques to reduce aviation emissions have been studied in the past, and strategies that can be implemented at airports include taxi-out times reduction, ground support equipment electrification and aviation biofuel implementation. These strategies have been analyzed only at the national scale, their effectiveness to improve air quality within the SoCAB given the local meteorology and chemical regimes is unclear. This work studies how the adoption of the techniques at commercial SoCAB airports affect ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations. In addition, potential impacts on public exposure to PM2.5 and O3 resulting from changes in the concentration of these pollutants are estimated. In addition, the work calculates aviation emissions for each scenario and simulate the transport and atmospheric chemistry of the pollutants using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. The simultaneous application of all reduction strategies is projected to reduce the aviation-attributable population weighted ground-level PM2.5 by 36% in summer and 32% in winter. On the other hand, O3 increases by 16% in winter. Occurring mostly in densely populated areas, the decrease in ground-level PM2.5 would have a positive health impact and help the region achieve attainment of national ambient air quality standards.

The phosphorus fractions and adsorption-desorption characteristics in the Wuliangsuhai Lake, China

Abstract

The phosphorus (P) fractions and adsorption-desorption characteristics in the Wuliangsuhai Lake were investigated through molybdenum blue/ascorbic acid method and indoor simulation experiments, respectively. The results showed that the highest total phosphorus concentration in overlying water (W-TP) was found in S1 which was in the hypereutrophic type. The mean concentration of particulate organic phosphorus (POP) was the most abundant P fraction (31.35% of the W-TP). The results of TP contents in sediments (S-TP) indicated that the most sampling sites were in the mild level of pollution. The contents of calcium-bound P (HCl-P) and residual P (Res-P) fractions together comprised 83.03–98.10% of the S-TP. Pseudo-second-order models fitted well with the adsorption-desorption kinetic of P fractions. The Langmuir and Freundlich models well described the adsorption isotherm of P fractions. The results of adsorption-desorption of P fractions indicated that the adsorption capacity was strong, the chemical adsorption was dominant, and the sediments was a source of P. Accordingly, we concluded that the Wuliangsuhai Lake was in the moderate pollution level, and the sediments as a source could desorb P in natural aquatic environment.

Physiologically relevant phantoms with high reliability are essential for extending the therapeutic applications of high-intensity therapeutic ultrasound. Here we describe a tissue-mimicking phantom capable of quantifying temperature changes and observing non-thermal phenomena by high-intensity therapeutic ultrasound. Using polydiacetylene liposomes, we fabricated agar-based polydiacetylene hydrogel phantoms (PHPs) that not only respond to temperature, but also have acoustic properties similar to those of human liver tissue. The color of PHPs changed from blue to red depending on the temperature in the range 40°C–70°C, where the red/blue ratio of PHP had a good linearity of 99.06% for the temperature changes. Furthermore, repeated high-intensity focused ultrasound led to histotripsy on the PHP with liquefied and damaged areas measuring 0.7 and 4.0 cm2, respectively, at the signal generator amplitude setting voltage of 80 mV. Our results indicate not only the usability of the thermochromic phantom, but also its potential for evaluating non-thermal phenomena in various high-intensity focused ultrasound therapies.

The purpose of our study was to evaluate any differences between lung ultrasonography and chest radiography (CR) images in children with a diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and, if there are any, to analyze the reasons and possible clinical implications. We reviewed the medical records of patients admitted to the pediatric ward from January 2014 to December 2016 and selected only cases discharged with a diagnosis of CAP who had undergone performed lung ultrasound (LUS) and CR within 24 h of each other. All radiologic and sonographic images of the selected cases were examined blindly by a senior radiologist and a skilled sonographer, respectively, with respect to number, position and size of lung injuries. Of the 47 cases of pneumonia, 28 lung lesions spotted by LUS were undetected by CR. Compared with CR, LUS detects more cases of pneumonia, a greater number of cases of double pneumonia and minimal pleural effusions. LUS should be considered the first-line imaging tool for CAP.
