Swallowing Kinematics and Factors Associated with Laryngeal Penetration and Aspiration in Stroke Survivors with Dysphagia

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοSwallowing and Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia)Πριν από 2 ώρες
Swallowing Kinematics and Factors Associated with Laryngeal Penetration and Aspiration in Stroke Survivors with Dysphagia: This study suggested that sluggish rather than decreased hyolaryngeal movements during swallowing are a remarkable feature of post-stroke dysphagia. The association of reduced epiglottic movement with the risk of aspiration in patients with post-stroke dysphagia was supported by the quantitative analysis. (Source: Dysphagia)

Targeting the DNA Damage Response in Cancer.

*Targeting the DNA Damage Response in Cancer.* Mol Cell. 2015 Nov 19;60(4):547-560 Authors: O'Connor MJ Abstract An underlying hallmark of cancers is their genomic instability, which is associated with a greater propensity to accumulate DNA damage. Historical treatment of cancer by radiotherapy and DNA-damaging chemotherapy is based on this principle, yet it is accompanied by significant collateral damage to normal tissue and unwanted side effects. Targeted therapy based on inhibiting the DNA damage response (DDR) in cancers offers the potential for a greater therapeutic window ... περισσότερα »

In the ten years since committing to clean energy transition, China has formulated a large number of policies and programs to achieve some very ambitious targets. This paper argues that the dearth of empirical studies concerning the implementation of these new policies and programs has created a knowledge gap between official policy documents, which are vague and lacking in specifics, and official policy outcomes, which are unreliable. In particular, the merits and limitations of flexible implementation with regard to desirable outcomes need to be debated and clarified. This paper... περισσότερα »

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 5 ώρες
Calcium phosphate ceramic materials are extensively used for bone replacement and regeneration in orthopedic, dental, and maxillofacial surgical applications. In order for these biomaterials to work effectively it is imperative that they undergo the process of degradation and resorption in vivo. This allows for the space to be created for the new bone tissue to form and infiltrate within the implanted graft material. Several factors affect the biodegradation and resorption of calcium phosphate materials after implantation. Various cell types are involved in the degradation process... περισσότερα »

The genomes of RNA viruses are relatively small. To overcome the small-size limitation, RNA viruses assign distinct functions to the processed viral proteins and their precursors. This is exemplified by poliovirus 3CD protein. 3C protein is a protease and RNA-binding protein. 3D protein is an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). 3CD exhibits unique protease and RNA-binding activities relative to 3C and is devoid of RdRp activity. The origin of these differences is unclear, since crystal structure of 3CD revealed "beads-on-a-string" structure with no significant structural differen... περισσότερα »

G-quadruplexes (G4s) are noncanonical DNA/RNA structures formed by guanine-rich sequences. Recently, G4s have been found not only in aptamers but also in the genomic DNA and transcribed RNA. In this study, we identified new RNA oligonucleotides working as aptamers by focusing on G4-forming RNAs located within the pre-mRNA. We showed that the G4 in the 5′ UTR and first intron of VEGFA bound to the protein encoded in VEGFA gene, VEGF165, with high affinity. Moreover, G4-forming RNAs located within the PDGFA and the PDGFB introns bound to PDGF-AA and PDGF-BB, respectively, indicating... περισσότερα »

DNA methyltransferases (MTases) catalyze the transfer of the activated methyl group of the cofactor S-adenosyl-l-methionine (AdoMet or SAM) to the exocyclic amino groups of adenine or cytosine or the C5 ring atom of cytosine within specific DNA sequences. The DNA adenine-N6 MTase from Thermus aquaticus (M.TaqI) is also capable of coupling synthetic N-adenosylaziridine cofactor analogues to its target adenine within the double-stranded 5′-TCGA-3′ sequence. This M.TaqI-mediated coupling reaction was exploited to sequence-specifically deliver fluorophores and biotin to DNA using N-ad... περισσότερα »

Tumor Microenvironment Confers De Novo Therapy Resistance: Resistance to currently available targeted therapies significantly hampers the survival of patients with prostate cancer with bone metastasis. Here we demonstrate an important resistance mechanism initiated from tumor-induced bone. Studies using an osteogenic patient-derived xenograft, MDA-PCa-118b, revealed that tumor cells resistant to cabozantinib, a Met and VEGFR-2 inhibitor, reside in a “resistance niche” adjacent to prostate cancer-induced bone. We performed secretome analysis of the conditioned medium from tumor-induc...περισσότερα »

Networks dynamics and opposite effects of Wnt5a on motility in melanomas

Abstract B2-32: Networks dynamics and opposite effects of Wnt5a on motility in melanomas: Melanoma is an aggressive cancer whose incidence continues to rise worldwide; furthermore, metastatic melanoma is associated with poor prognosis. Wnt signaling may lead to conflicting effects on the biology of melanoma as it may either decrease or increase the incidence of metastasis. Here, we show that Wnt5a enhances motility in 3/5 cell lines and represses motility in the other two. We measured the effects of perturbations of the levels of Wnt5a, HADHB, Pirin, and Mart1 on the levels of the se...περισσότερα »

Raised Schneiderian membrane compared with peeled bony walls in the formation of bone: We read with interest the experimental study on dogs by Rong et al,1 in which they used a biocompatible, non-absorbable, ultrathin, titanium membrane with no osteoinductive or osteogenic properties. The membrane was shaped and implanted as a barrier to shield against migration of osteoprogenitor cells from the raised Schneiderian membrane and from the surrounding bony walls towards the implanted graft material. This distinguished between the roles of the two in the formation of new bone.

Topic shift impairs pronoun resolution during sentence comprehension: Evidence from event-related potentials

Abstract This study investigated how topic shift and topic continuation influence pronoun interpretation in Chinese. ERPs recorded on pronouns in topic structure showed stronger and earlier late positive responses (P600) for the topic-shift than for the topic-continuation conditions. However, in nontopic structure where the subject (denoting only subjecthood), rather than the topic (denoting both topichood and subjecthood), acted as the antecedent of the pronoun, almost indistinguishable P600 responses were obtained on the pronoun regardless of whether it was referring to the subj... περισσότερα »

Human Frequency Following Response: Neural Representation of Envelope and Temporal Fine Structure in Listeners with Normal Hearing and Sensorineural Hearing Loss.: Objective: Listeners with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) typically experience reduced speech perception, which is not completely restored with amplification. This likely occurs because cochlear damage, in addition to elevating audiometric thresholds, alters the neural representation of speech transmitted to higher centers along the auditory neuroaxis. While the deleterious effects of SNHL on speech perception in humans...περισσότερα »
