Transfusion Medicine

Transfusion Medicine: Transfusion is essential for the care of a great number of individuals with Hematologic and Oncologic disorders; pediatric and adult patients alike often require red blood cell (RBC), platelet, plasma, or other blood component transfusions during their treatment courses. Because of the close relationship between Transfusion Medicine/Apheresis and Hematology/Oncology, it is imperative that clinicians in these arenas understand the advancements and challenges in each of their respective fields. Over the course of the past few decades, the investigative and clinical foci of Transfusion Services/Blood Banks has shifted from optimization of component processing/storage and reduction in infectious disease transmission for viruses such as HIV to better defining evidence-based criteria for blood component utilization, furthering our understanding of the noninfectious serious hazards of transfusion, and minimizing other transfusion-related complications.
