Identification of putative laryngeal and pharyngeal lichen planus lesions: an endoscopic preliminary evaluation in 16 patients
Abstract Lichen planus is a very common autoimmune inflammatory disease, affecting 1‐3% of general population Its oral form ‐ also known as Oral Lichen Planus ‐ is the most common, with a prevalence between 1% and 2% in the general population. LP lesions were discovered in the esophagus in OLP patients. The malignant transformation risk of those lesions is currently unknown, but it can be equivalent to oral lesions ‐ approximately 1‐3%. Our study points towards the presence of pharyngolaryngeal...

Predictive value of CD8/FOXP3 ratio combined with PD‐L1 expression for radiosensitivity in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx receiving definitive radiation therapy
Abstract Background Little is known about immune‐related radiosensitivity in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx (SCC‐L) treated with radiation therapy (RT). Methods We retrospectively reviewed 91 patients with SCC‐L treated with RT or chemoradiation therapy and performed immunohistochemical examination to analyze PD‐L1 level on tumor cells, CD4+ tumor‐infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), CD8+TIL, and FOXP3+TIL using pretreated biopsy specimens. The association between these...

Keys to successful implementation of routine symptom monitoring in head and neck oncology with “Healthcare Monitor” and patients' perspectives of quality of care
Abstract Background Value‐based health care is increasingly used to facilitate a systematic approach during follow‐up of patients. We developed Healthcare Monitor (HM): a structure of electronic patient‐reported outcome measures (ePROs) for the longitudinal follow‐up of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. This study shares key lessons from implementation and seeks to provide insight into how patients experience HM. Methods We conducted a mixed‐methods study using quantitative data from...

COVID19 and Rhinology/Facial Plastics
This review summarizes the challenges and adaptations that have taken place in the field of Rhinology and Facial plastics in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the prolonged exposure and manipulation of the nasal and oral cavities portends high risk of viral transmission. We discuss evidence-based recommendations to mitigate the risk of viral transmission through novel techniques and device implementation as well as increasing conservative management of certain pathologies.

Pediatric Otolaryngology in the COVID-19 Era
While the majority of attention to the healthcare impact of COVID-19 has focused on adult first responders and critical care providers, the pandemic has had a profound effect on the entire healthcare industry, including the pediatric otolaryngology community. The objective of this article is to highlight the unique ramifications of COVID-19 on pediatric otolaryngology, with a focus on the immediate and potential long-term shifts in practice. Specifically, the article is divided into three sections...

Comparing the Accuracy of the da Vinci Xi and da Vinci Si for Image Guidance and Automation
Abstract BackgroundCurrent laparoscopic surgical robots are teleoperated, which requires high fidelity differential motions but does not require absolute accuracy. Emerging applications, including image guidance and automation, require absolute accuracy. The absolute accuracy of the da Vinci Xi robot has not yet been characterized or compared to the Si system, which is now being phased out. This paper compares the accuracy of the two.MethodsWe measure robot tip positions and encoder values assessing...

Characterizing Vocal Fold Injury Recovery in a Rabbit Model With Three‐Dimensional Virtual Histology
Objectives/Hypothesis In animal studies of vocal fold scarring and treatment, imaging‐based evaluation is most often conducted by tissue slicing and histological staining. Given variation in anatomy, injury type, severity, and sacrifice timepoints, planar histological sections provide limited spatiotemporal details of tissue repair. Three‐dimensional (3D) virtual histology may provide additional contextual spatial information, enhancing objective interpretation. The study's aim was to evaluate the...

Can Ophthalmologic Examination Predict Abducens Nerve Recovery After Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery?
Objectives While abducens nerve palsy (ANP) is a known risk in the setting of some endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery (ESBS), frequency and prognosis of post‐operative palsy remain unknown. Our goals were to determine the frequency and prognosis of ANP after high‐risk ESBS, and identify factors associated with recovery. Methods Retrospective case series of all patients with pathology at highest risk for abducens nerve injury (pituitary adenoma, chordoma, meningioma, chondrosarcoma, cholesterol...

Predictors of Increased Surgical Drain Output following Type I Thyroplasty for Glottic Insufficiency
Objective To determine predictors of increased drain output following type I thyroplasty for glottic insufficiency. Study Design Retrospective chart review. Methods A retrospective review was conducted for patients who underwent type I thyroplasty for glottic insufficiency from 2014–2019. The primary outcome was 24‐hour drain output. Increased drain output was defined as >50th percentile for the sample. Univariate logistic regression models and linear regression models were used....

Occult Lymph Node Metastasis in Early‐Stage Glottic Cancer in the National Cancer Database
Objectives Early‐stage glottic cancer (cT1–T2 cN0) may be treated by primary surgery or radiation. Elective treatment of the neck in clinically N0 disease is usually not performed due to low rates of regional lymph node metastasis. This study examines the role of elective neck dissection (END) and rate of occult nodal metastasis in cT1–T2 cN0 glottic cancer treated with primary surgery. Study Design Retrospective cohort study. Methods The National Cancer Database was used to identify...

Usefulness of Color Doppler Ultrasonography in the Risk Stratification of Thyroid Nodules
Introduction: Thyroid ultrasound (US) is crucial for clinical decision in the management of thyroid nodules. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to test if the evaluation of thyroid nodules’ vascularization could improve the risk stratification ability of the American College of Radiology (ACR) TI-RADS classification system. Methods: A total of 873 thyroid nodules undergoing fine-needle aspiration were classified according to ACR TI-RADS US classification. Three types of vascularization were...

Multinational Survey of Treatment Practices of Clinicians Managing Subclinical Hypothyroidism in Older People in 2019
Background: International societies have recommended that levothyroxine should not routinely be prescribed in older individuals for the management of mild subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH). However, it is unknown whether clinicians managing people with SCH are either aware of or adhere to these guidelines. Methods: A web-based survey of members of several international thyroid associations and general practitioners in North-East England was conducted. Respondents were presented with a vignette of...

Dose-Dependent Influence of Antithyroid Drugs on the Difference in Free Thyroxine Levels between Mothers with Graves’ Hyperthyroidism and Their Neonates
Background: Several guidelines have recommended that the use of the lowest effective dose of antithyroid drugs (ATDs) that maintains maternal serum free thyroxine (FT4) levels at or moderately above the upper limit of the reference range is appropriate for fetal euthyroid status. However, little is known about whether ATD dosage affects the difference in serum FT4 levels between the mother and neonate. We conducted a retrospective study at a tertiary hospital in Japan to investigate the dose-dependent...
