Compendium of scalp arteriovenous malformation (AVM) cases—a retrospective study and review

Abstract

Background

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are abnormal connections between arterial feeding vessels and draining veins, devoid of a normal capillary bed. Treatment options include complete surgical excision or eradication. Following surgical excision, the defect can be closed primarily or covered with the preplanned local flap or skin graft. We aimed to assess various cases of AVMs and review the current literature to determine a treatment rationale and improve surgical outcomes.

Methods

A retrospective study including data of 21 patients with extra cranial scalp AVMs was carried out at our institute between 2010 and 2016. Fourteen patients underwent digital subtraction angiography; remaining patients were evaluated by MR/CT angiography. Eighteen patients underwent direct excision. Three patients with large AVMs (> 10 cm) underwent preoperative embolization followed by surgical excision.

Results

Of the 21 patients with extra cranial scalp AVMs, there were 11 males and 10 females with mean age of 24 years ranging from 3 to 41 years. The mean duration of symptom was 6.7 years. Superficial temporal artery (62%) was the most commonly involved feeder vessel. Eighteen patients underwent direct excision while three underwent embolization followed by excision. Two patients had recurrence of symptoms. There was partial flap necrosis in three patients which were managed with dressings and skin graft.

Conclusions

Surgical excision of AVMs, which includes ligation of all arterial feeders near the nidus and excision of nidus, is a safe option with lesser complications and gives good results. Preoperative embolization reduces vascularity and helps in easy identification of AVMs during surgery thus achieving complete excision and improving the prognosis of treatment especially in the large AVM.

Level of Evidence: Level IV, therapeutic study.

Numerical study of the influence of electrode arrangements in electrokinetic remediation technique

Abstract

The effectiveness of electrokinetic remediation for soils depends on several factors such as the arrangement and shape of electrodes. This paper presents a numerical study on external electrostatic field generated by seven different electrode configurations in any unbounded two-dimensional domain. The boundary condition at infinity for the voltage is approximated by the iterative algorithm that expands the domain till the limit of the specified tolerance (threshold value). The numerical results indicate that there is no unique configuration with larger effective area for all spacings between the oppositely charged electrodes. In addition, the configuration with the smallest inactive electric field strength spots for all spacings between the electrodes is not unique. Moreover, the voltage profile for all electrode configurations is nonlinear, and the external electric field strength varies widely near the electrodes. Only in the intermediate region between the electrodes the external electric field strength approaches a constant value.

Hydrothermal synthesis of TiO 2 hollow spheres adorned with SnO 2 quantum dots and their efficiency in the production of methanol via photocatalysis

Abstract

TiO2 hollow spheres and TiO2 hollow spheres adorned with SnO2 quantum dots were synthesized successfully under mild temperature and autogenous pressure using the hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and UV–vis spectroscopy were used to characterize the physical and chemical nature of the synthesized sample. The characterized samples were used in the photocatalytic applications to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the presence of water under the influence of visible light. Our observation confirmed that with increasing SnO2 content there is a tremendous change in the photocatalytic performance of the samples, due to free mobility of the electrons and holes and decline in charge recombination centers formed with the formation of nano-heterojunction between SnO2 and TiO2. The greater photocatalytic production of methanol was achieved using 2ST sample, i.e., 1.61 μmol/g/h which tends to decrease with an increase in SnO2 content.

Präoperative Bestimmung des Ursprungsnervs von Vestibularisschwannomen

Zusammenfassung

Hintergrund
