The skin health of fishermen in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract

Background

Fishing is an important economic activity worldwide, but there are only a few studies on the skin health of fishermen. Daily activities in fishing communities expose fishermen to risks of traumatic, actinic, and sea dermatoses.

Methods

A semi‐structured questionnaire was applied to 388 fishermen from 2014 to 2015 at their workplace (Z‐8 to Z‐13 fishing communities). The data collected were evaluated for descriptive analysis. In the bivariate analysis of the data, the Pearson chi‐square test was used. The multinomial logistic regression was used to obtain estimates of odds ratios and adjusted confidence intervals for confounding variables.

Results

Three hundred and nine (79.6%) fishermen reported accidents during their fishing activity. The main fish species implicated were Genidens genidens and Scorpaena brasiliensis. Inappropriate or potentially harmful traditional treatments without scientific evidence of efficacy were recorded as main/auxiliary treatment. Other significant skin injuries were due to trauma from fishing tackle and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Three hundred and twenty (82.5%) fishermen reported that they had never used any sun protective devices or sunscreen.

Conclusions

Traumatic injuries due to fish stings were the most common accidents in this group. Despite chronic occupational sun exposure and its hazards, most fishermen did not adopt any method of photoprotection. Health educational activities as well as a specific health program for these professionals are necessary to improve the health of fishermen in Guanabara Bay area.

Cutaneous eruptions associated with hematologic malignancies: the need for a unifying nomenclature

Abstract

we read with interest the study by Visseaux et al., entitled "T‐cell papulosis associated with B‐cell malignancies: a distinctive clinicopathologic entity". Herein, the authors reviewed retrospectively 37 patients with B‐cell malignancies, mostly B‐cells chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (B‐CLL), showing recurrent episodes of pruritic papules, papulo‐vesicles or nodules. Since the specific association with lymphoproliferative disorders and the lack of eosinophils in some of the histopathologic slides, the authors designated the term "T‐cell papulosis associated with B‐cell malignancies" instead of the so‐called "eosinophilic dermatosis of hematologic malignancies" (EDHM).1 Moreover, the condition was previously referred to as "insect bite‐like reactions" or "exaggerated delayed hypersensitivity to mosquito bites".

Partitioning characteristic of chlorine ion in gas and solid phases in process of desulfurization wastewater evaporation: model development and calculation

Abstract

Since the promulgation of "Water Pollution Control Action Plan " in China, zero liquid discharge of desulfurization wastewater has become a new trend of power plant water pollution control. Aiming at the application of desulfurization wastewater evaporation technology using high-temperature flue gas, simulation and experimental research on quantifying and predicting gas-solid partitioning of chlorine ion under different operation conditions are carried out in this paper. The gas-liquid equilibrium theory is applied to the complex mixed salt system; based on state equation, the semi-empirical model of gas-solid phase partitioning coefficient of chlorine ion is calculated, with high degree of fitting range from 180 to 380 °C. The essential effects of pH, Cl concentration, and total dissolved solids (TDS) on the gas-solid phase partitioning coefficient of chlorine ion are investigated. The study provides key data for the application of evaporation technology using high-temperature flue gas, obtaining the quantification and prediction of chlorine ion volatilization during desulfurization wastewater evaporation.
