Pedunculated Epibulbar Osseous Choristoma in a Newborn

Choristomas represent a form of heterotopia, where microscopically normal tissue is found in an abnormal location. Figures 1 and 2 (Figure 2 available at www.jpeds.com) illustrate an episcleral osseous choristoma with a pedunculated appearance as well as a small communicating stalk protruding laterally in the right palpebral fissure. Osseous choristomas are benign and become clinically relevant when they result in incomplete eyelid closure, placing patients at risk for exposure keratopathy, or when they are amblyogenic as a result of partial or complete unilateral occlusion of vision.
