Dyspigmentation of skin as a clue to the diagnosis of dystonia in a 10-year old child

Dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria (DSH) is an uncommon pigmentary genodermatosis characterized by the presence of hyper- and hypopigmented macules on the dorsal aspects of the extremities. The association of neurological disorders with DSH have rarely been reported in literature. In this article we describe herein a 10- year-old- girl who presented to us with dystonic features with dyspigmentation of skin, and the diagnosis of DSH was made possible after histopathological examination of the involved skin. In this article we seek to emphasize the importance of neurological evaluation in a patient with pigmentary disorder.
