Re: Medical students’ understanding of oral and maxillofacial surgery: an Irish perspective

We read the recent paper by Kielty et al with interest.1 They identified gaps in the knowledge of undergraduate medical students at two Irish medical schools about the training in and scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. At a different Irish medical school we found that students lacked the experience, knowledge, and confidence to treat problems in the oral cavity and examine the face. Other specialties have taken the lead in examining the oral cavity,2 and the issue of competence in this and the lack of knowledge of conditions treated by oral and maxillofacial surgeons have been recognised for some time.
