Histological subtype of treatment failures after noninvasive therapy for superficial basal-cell carcinoma: an observational study

Treatment failures after noninvasive therapy for superficial basal-cell carcinoma are frequently of a non-superficial subtype. These non-superficial treatment failures probably result from underdiagnosed aggressive components in primary tumors, not from transformation; they were less frequently observed following imiquimod than after methylaminolevulinate-photodynamic therapy or 5-fluorouracil, and more often in the head and neck area. Close follow-up is necessary.
