The loss of a close family member is one of the most stressful experiences that people encounter and requires intense readjustment. Adjustment after loss is highly individual, and numerous studies have identified the factors associated with poor psychological adjustment to bereavement.1 Most research in this area has focused on negative experiences, but the bereaved also can find benefit in loss.
