Does hyperbaric oxygen therapy play a role in the management of osteoradionecrosis? A survey of Dutch oral and maxillofacial surgeons
For decades, hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has often been part of the treatment of osteoradionecrosis (ORN), despite controversy in the literature about its efficacy. An online survey was conducted to investigate the use of HBO in the treatment of ORN by Dutch oral and maxillofacial surgeons and to assess their perception of its efficacy. Of the 53 Dutch oral and maxillofacial surgery units contacted, 49 (92%) replied. Thirty-five were not head and neck cancer (HNC) units or preferred partner (PP-HNC)...

Anthropometric Parameters for Nose Evaluation and Nasal Surgery Planning
Background: The esthetic characteristics of face and nose are commonly evaluated before rhinoplasty using a completely subjective method, due to the lack of validated and reliable methods for quantifying facial esthetics and for accurate nose treatment planning. The aim of the study was to review the literature to determine and evaluate the points, distances, and angles commonly used in the treatment planning for rhinoplasty. Methods: Research based on anthropometric studies of the...

New Solutions to Improve the Accuracy of the Navigation-Guided Foreign Body Removal in Craniomaxillofacial Deep Space
Objective: Surgical navigation-guided removal of foreign bodies in the craniomaxillofacial region has been proven to be an effective method. However, there have been some unsuccessful patients due to reduced navigation accuracy or complicated and undetectable anatomy. This article summarizes the experience and proposes some solutions to achieve better results. Study design: Two solutions were proposed to optimize the surgical navigation procedure: using a 3-dimensionally printed customized...

Hyaluronic Acid Injections to Correct Lips Deformity Following Surgical Removal of Permanent Implant
One of the most attractive areas of the face are the lips, they are crucial for emotion and communication, both during animation and at rest. Throughout the years, several techniques to obtain permanent lip enhancement have been introduced, such as the use of nonresorbable fillers. The main problem related to permanent fillers is that undesirable results could not always be repaired; although lip sequelae can be addressed surgically, some surgeons will not perform this type of procedure due to its...

Microsurgical Resection of a Primary Intraosseous Meningioma Encasing the Superior Sagittal Sinus
Primary intraosseous meningiomas (PIMs) are an infrequent variant of meningiomas characterized by hyperostosis and brain compression. En bloc surgical resection of giant PIMs involving critical structures such as venous sinuses or cranial nerves could be associated with significant morbidity. The objective of this report is to demonstrate the safety and feasibility of piecemeal resection of PIMs involving the superior sagittal sinus and frontal sinus. Vascular lesions, including hemangiomas and vascular malformations, are common benign diseases. More than 50% originate from blood vessels or vascular structures and are locate in the head and neck region. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency and safety of a combination of laser treatments for oral venous malformations using ultrasound navigation. This study reports 3 cases of massive vascular malformation in the oral cavity, which were treated by a combination of a multiple spotted transmucosal...

Intraosseous Lipoma in the Mandibular Condyle
Intraosseous lipomas are rare benign tumors of the bone, especially for the mandible. The etiology remains unclear, although several hypotheses have been proposed, such as trauma, blood vessel infarction, aging and inflammation. Clinically, the symptoms mainly depend on the location and size of the tumors. Radiographically, the lesions are usually radiolucent occasionally accompanied by radiopacity. The diagnosis is challenging, and histopathologic examination is necessary for definite diagnosis....

Gingival Sulcus Incision for Zygomaticomaxillary Complex Fracture
The usual surgical approaches for zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture are subciliary incision, transconjunctival incision, eyebrow incision, lateral canthal incision, coronal incision, preauricular incision, and superior gingivobuccal incision. In the intraoral approach, a horizontal mucoperiosteal incision is performed at the superior gingivobuccal region, and sometimes, includes the upper labial frenum. This may cause discomfort in the oral cavity because of postoperative scarring and shortening...

Co-culture of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells and Chondrocytes With Transforming Growth Factor-Beta 3 Promotes Chondrogenic Differentiation
Tissue engineering cartilage is a promising strategy to reconstruct the craniofacial cartilaginous defects. It demands plenty of chondrocytes to generate human-sized craniofacial frameworks. Partly replacement of chondrocytes by adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) can be an alternative strategy. The study aimed at evaluating the chondrogenic outcome of ADSCs and chondrocytes in direct co-culture with transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β3). Porcine ADSCs and chondrocytes were obtained from abdominal...

As the authors recently experienced a patient with pyogenic granuloma arising from the hard palate, they tried to review all the previously reported literatures with the emphasis on its clinical characteristics that can help the accurate diagnosis of this unusual lesion. Based on our experience and literatures review, clinicians should keep in mind that pyogenic granuloma should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of the hard palatal mass despite its rarity. Comment on professional quality of life and burnout amongst radiation oncologists: the impact of alexithymia and empathy
I have read with great interest the recent article by Franco et al, recently reported in this journal[1]. The authors have uniquely examined the association between alexithymia personality with increased burnout and less professional satisfaction[1]. They also linked empathic concern with increased stress, without leading to burnout, but resulting in higher professional fulfilment[1].

The importance of IL-6 blockade beyond the COVID-19 pandemic: consideration for cancer care
The novel human Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), which outbroke in Wuhan (China) in late 2019, is now responsible for the pandemic diffusion of COVID-19 [1–3]. Researchers are working on the validation of effective protocols, including antiviral therapies and vaccines [4]. Case-fatality rate seems correlated with virally-driven hyperinflammation [4,5]. In this sense, recent data suggest a crucial role for cytokines release syndrome (CRS) and human interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels as fatality predictors [4,5].
