Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children in New York State
Since December 2019, the pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), has resulted in high morbidity and mortality worldwide. New York State emerged as an epicenter of the outbreak in the United States,…

Cancer oligometastases heterogeneity: Standardizing nomenclature in regard to defining oligometastatic disease from a radiation oncology perspective: an ESTRO-ASTRO consensus document
We congratulate the ESTRO-ASTRO collaboration describing the consensus on cancer oligometastases[1]. Oncologists have inherited the term oligometastasis from the 1995 which defines a distinct spectrum of cancer spread prior to metastatic phase of disease. With advances in technology, the therapeutic window opened wide for successful treatment options offering the potential of cure for oligometastases. We would like to make several observations:

Paraneoplastic Pemphigus Involving the Respiratory and Gastrointestinal Mucosae
Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP), an autoimmune mucocutaneous disorder involving the oral and bronchial mucosae, is a rare complication of hematologic malignancy. Serologically, serum autoantibodies against varied desmosome-related proteins are of notice. PNP is often lethal due to bronchiolitis obliterans and opportunistic infection. A 70-year-old Japanese male complained of dry cough, stomatitis, and sore throat. The lips and oral mucosa were severely eroded, and skin eruptions were seen on the chest...

Randomized Phase II Trial of Carboplatin-Paclitaxel Compared with Carboplatin-Paclitaxel-Trastuzumab in Advanced (Stage III-IV) or Recurrent Uterine Serous Carcinomas that Overexpress Her2/Neu (NCT01367002): Updated Overall Survival Analysis
Purpose:Uterine-serous-carcinoma (USC) is an aggressive variant of endometrial cancer. On the basis of preliminary results of a multicenter, randomized phase II trial, trastuzumab (T), a humanized-mAb targeting Her2/Neu, in combination with carboplatin/paclitaxel (C/P), is recognized as an alternative in treating advanced/recurrent HER2/Neu-positive USC. We report the updated survival analysis of NCT01367002.Patients and Methods:Eligible patients had stage III to IV or recurrent disease. Participants...

Facts and hopes in immunotherapy of soft tissue sarcomas
Sarcomas are mesenchymal tumors, encompassing more than 175 subtypes, each one with their own genetic complexities. As a result, immunotherapy approaches have not been universally successful across the wide rage of diverse subtypes. The actual state of science and the current clinical data utilizing immunotherapy within the soft tissue sarcomas (STS) will be detailed in this review. More precisely, the review will focus on: a) the role of the immune microenvironment in the development and activity...

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor: challenges and opportunities for a new decade
Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) provides a paradigm to evaluate new molecularly-targeted therapies and to identify structural and functional mechanisms for drug response and resistance. Drug development in GIST has successfully exploited the high reliance on KIT/PDGFRA oncogenic signaling as a therapeutic vulnerability. The recent arrival of avapritinib and ripretinib to the GIST arena has aimed to further improve on precision kinase inhibition and address tumor heterogeneity in imatinib-resistant...

{-}{-}{-}cnd-1/NeuroD1 Functions with the Homeobox Gene ceh-5/Vax2 and Hox Gene {-}ceh-13/Labial to Specify Aspects of RME and DD Neuron Fate in Caenorhabditis elegans
Identifying the mechanisms behind neuronal fate specification are key to understanding normal neural development in addition to neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and schizophrenia. In vivo cell fate specification is difficult to study in vertebrates. However, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, with its invariant cell lineage and simple nervous system of 302 neurons, is an ideal organism to explore the earliest stages of neural development. We used a comparative transcriptome approach...

Measuring Genome Sizes Using Read-Depth, k-mers, and Flow Cytometry: Methodological Comparisons in Beetles (Coleoptera)
Measuring genome size across different species can yield important insights into evolution of the genome and allow for more informed decisions when designing next-generation genomic sequencing projects. New techniques for estimating genome size using shallow genomic sequence data have emerged which have the potential to augment our knowledge of genome sizes, yet these methods have only been used in a limited number of empirical studies. In this project, we compare estimation methods using next-generation...

Ultraconserved Non-coding DNA Within Diptera and Hymenoptera
This study has taken advantage of the availability of the assembled genomic sequence of flies, mosquitos, ants and bees to explore the presence of ultraconserved sequence elements in these phylogenetic groups. Many of the conserved sequence blocks (CSBs) that constitute Drosophila cis-regulatory DNA, recognized by EvoPrinter alignment protocols,...

Development of MRI Projection Mapping System for Breast-Conserving Surgery in the Operating Room: Preliminary Clinical Results in Invasive Breast Cancer
Aim. To evaluate the feasibility of a newly developed prototype MRI projection mapping (PM) system for localization of invasive breast cancer before breast-conserving surgery. Methods. This prospective study enrolled 10 women with invasive breast cancer. MRI was performed in both prone and supine positions. The tumor location was drawn on the breast skin using palpation and sonography while referring to the prone MRI (i.e., a conventional method). A maximum intensity projection image generated from...

Mathematical Model for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Containing Isolation Class
The deadly coronavirus continues to spread across the globe, and mathematical models can be used to show suspected, recovered, and deceased coronavirus patients, as well as how many people have been tested. Researchers still do not know definitively whether surviving a COVID-19 infection means you gain long-lasting immunity and, if so, for how long? In order to understand, we think that this study may lead to better guessing the spread of this pandemic in future. We develop a mathematical model to...

The Blood Gene Expression Signature for Kawasaki Disease in Children Identified with Advanced Feature Selection Methods
Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute vasculitis, accompanied by coronary artery aneurysm, coronary artery dilatation, arrhythmia, and other serious cardiovascular diseases. So far, the etiology of KD is unclear; it is necessary to study the molecular mechanism and related factors of KD. In this study, we analyzed the expression profiles of 75 DB (identifying bacteria), 122 DV (identifying virus), 71 HC (healthy control), and 311 KD (Kawasaki disease) samples. 332 key genes related to KD and pathogen...

Putative Genes and Pathways Involved in the Acne Treatment of Isotretinoin via Microarray Data Analyses
Acne is the eighth most common disease worldwide. Disease burden of acne such as anxiety, reduced self-esteem, and facial scarring lowers the life quality of acne patients. Isotretinoin is the most potent treatment for moderate-severe acne. However, the adverse events of isotretinoin especially teratogenicity limit its use. This study aims at investigating the therapeutical mechanisms of isotretinoin using bioinformatics analysis. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were filtered from microarray...

The aim of this study is to establish whether facet tropism (FT) and orientation (FO) are associated with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (DLSS). A retrospective computerized tomography (CT) study including 274 individuals was divided into two groups: control (82 males and 81 females) and stenosis (59 males and 52 females). All participants have undergone high-resolution CT scan of the lumbar spine in the same position. FT and FO were measured at L1-2 to L5-S1. Significant sagittal FO was noted...
