ABSTRACT Background Traditionally patients are seen by an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) surgeon prior to Allied Health referral for treatment of swallowing, voice, hearing, and dizziness. Wait‐times for ENT consultations often exceed those clinically recommended. We evaluated the service impact of five Allied Health Primary Contact clinics (AHPC‐ENT) on wait‐times and access to treatment. Setting Ametropolitan Australian University Hospital outpatient ENT Department. Participants We created...

Abstract The high mobility group AT‐hook 2 (HMGA2) gene encodes a transcription factor that is expressed during embryonic development but down‐regulated in adult tissues. Its re‐expression in adult tissues is often associated with tumorigenesis. In this study, we found that HMGA2 is highly expressed in human cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cell lines and primary SCC tumors, but not in adjacent normal skin. In non‐ultraviolet (UV)‐irradiated mouse skin, baseline Hmga2 expression was detected...
Abstract Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are members of the superfamily of neurotransmitter‐gated ion channels. The natural ligand for nAChRs is the endogenous neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Among the nAChRs is the α7nAChR. It is not only expressed by neural tissues but also in the skin. A number of different resident cutaneous cell types including epidermal keratinocytes, sebocytes and dermal fibroblasts express functional α7nAChR. Moreover, cells of the immune system such as lymphocytes,...
Abstract Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a rare, inflammatory skin disease characterized by recurrent flares of pustulation accompanied by systemic symptoms. Due to its acuteness, sufficient diagnosis and treatment is essential, but often faces challenges. We recently overviewed various treatment options of GPP utilizing established therapies in psoriasis vulgaris (PsO). Although there is a pathogenic relation to PsO, more and more evidence suggests a predominant involvement of the innate...
Abstract Background Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disorder with cutaneous and systemic manifestations and substantial negative effects on patients’ quality of life. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are post‐transcriptional regulators of gene expression that play a role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Previously studies, from others and by us, highlighted specific miRNAs that are dysregulated in psoriatic lesions. MicroRNA‐197‐3p (miR‐197) expression is down‐regulated in psoriatic lesions compared to...
Abstract The cell dynamics and cell origin for anagen hair follicle (HF) repair following chemotherapeutic injury are unclear. We first mapped the HF response to cyclophosphamide (CYP) at natural anagen VI in mice. We found that 30 to 60 mg/kg of CYP lead to dose‐dependent HF dystrophy that was spontaneously repaired with anagen resumption while 120 mg/kg of CYP prematurely induced catagen/telogen entry. To explore how anagen HF repair is achieved in the dystrophic anagen pathway, we analyzed the...

There have been extensive paradigm shifts in the management of perioperative analgesia when it comes to surgical patients over the past 3 decades. In the late 1990s, several private and government-based organizations raised recognition of pain as an undertreated “vital sign,” a policy that has led to unintended consequences, including the rise of the contemporary opioid epidemic.
These articles on leadership, diversity, and inclusion are being written, reviewed, and published in undoubtedly turbulent times. We are forging forward despite the uncertainties inherent in a global pandemic while simultaneously confronting hard realities about our society and embedded systemic issues. For example, the stark racial disparities, and disproportionate burden borne by minority populations, in COVID-19 outcomes are headline news. Conversations about how health is not biologically predetermined,...

Abstract BackgroundThe improvement of the steer‐ability and controllability of catheters is highly required because catheter‐based interventional diagnosis and therapy have become increasingly popular. However, active catheters are often complex and expensive.MethodsThis paper attempts to control catheter tip by a twisted string actuator. Experiments are carried out to analyze the full actuation and bending characteristics of the active catheter.ResultsIt is indicated that the expected bending motion...

Objective Sjögren syndrome is a systemic inflammatory disease causing gland dysfunction. Few (and contradictory) reports on the mucosal effects of Sjögren syndrome have appeared. Here, we objectively demonstrate nasal dryness in Sjögren syndrome patients and explore the effect of such dryness on olfaction. Methods Thirty‐four consecutive patients with primary Sjögren syndrome were enrolled in this cross‐sectional study. The control group consisted of 21 age‐ and sex‐matched volunteers. Medical...
