Robotic complete mesocolic excision and central vascular ligation for right‐sided colon cancer: short‐term outcomes from a case series
This study aims to report the safety profile of complete mesocolic excision and central vascular ligation in patients undergoing robotic surgery for right‐sided colon cancer during the introduction of this technique across two institutions in Australia. This series of 20 patients demonstrates a safe introduction of robotic complete mesocolic excision and central vascular ligation in patients with right‐sided colon cancer, without Clavien III or more complications and no reinterventions. All patients...

Operative outcome of hernia repair with synthetic mesh in immunocompromised patients
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of immunosuppression on wound complications after hernia repair with synthetic mesh. Our results do not show an association between immunosuppression and mesh infection or surgical site infection, but suggest that immunosuppression and mesh infection increase the odds for hernia recurrence. Abstract Background The safety of synthetic mesh in elective hernia repair in the setting of immunosuppression lacks national and international...

Investigation of recurrent laryngeal palsy rates for potential associations during thyroidectomy
Recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy following thyroidectomy is a major cause of morbidity. We have analysed 1003 consecutive cases of thyroidectomy undertaken at one institution, in an effort to identify rates of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy and potential associations including anthropometric and airway factors. The study demonstrated that operative duration and male sex were associated with increased risk of palsy. Abstract Background There are many clinical associations and potential...

Incidentally discovered Meckel's diverticulum: should I stay or should I go?
Although histological alterations are more frequent in complicated Meckel's diverticulum (MD), ectopic mucosa and even tumour may be lodged in incidental MD. Complicated MD can be diagnosed before surgery in only 12% of cases. Stapled diverticulectomy has been shown to be a low‐risk surgical procedure. Diverticulectomy is a safe and effective method of treatment of incidentally discovered MD. Abstract Background The aim of this study was to assess the indication for surgical treatment...

Clinical activity and outcomes during Geelong's general surgery response to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic
This paper describes Geelong's general surgical response, surgical activity and outcomes and the effect on surgical training. Geelong was able to provide a safe and effective General Surgery Service during the first 7 weeks of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. There are some valuable lessons which could be adopted elsewhere in the event of a surge or second wave of cases. Abstract Background The response to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has required conserving capacity and...

Comparison between video‐assisted retroperitoneal debridement and small incision pancreatic necrosectomy in infected pancreatic necrosis
Our aim was to evaluate the outcome by comparing video‐assisted retroperitoneal debridement (VARD) and small incision pancreatic necrosectomy (SIPN) for infected pancreatic necrosis. SIPN and VARD are both an effective treatment for infected pancreatic necrosis with acceptable mortality and complication rates. SIPN can reduce the rate of reinterventions due to poor clinical improvement with a shorter hospital stay and a lower total cost compared with VARD. Abstract Background Debridement...
